1. Encoding: what enters memory

Encoding begins with attention. The brain does not preserve every detail in a scene; it selects information that appears relevant to the current goal. Novelty, contrast, repetition, and emotional significance make a detail more likely to be encoded. Divided attention produces a weaker memory even when the person feels familiar with the material.

Example: Students who only reread a slide often recognize the wording later but struggle to explain the idea without the slide. Retrieval practice creates a stronger, more usable memory than passive review.

2. Retrieval: remembering is rebuilding

A stored memory is reconstructed from distributed pieces. The question being asked, the setting, and information learned later can all influence which pieces are selected. Each act of recall may strengthen some details while weakening or changing others. Confidence therefore does not guarantee accuracy.

3. Emotion and context

Emotion can make the central moment of an experience vivid while reducing memory for peripheral details. Useful study cues should resemble the situation in which the knowledge will be needed.

4. Why stories are memorable

Narrative gives isolated facts a sequence of causes, changes, and consequences. A listener no longer has to remember every statement independently because each idea predicts the next. Effective explanations establish a central question, group supporting evidence into a small number of sections, and return to the main point at transitions.
